Revolvers

These must be .45 caliber, single action with a fixed sight, designed prior to 1898 (or reproductions thereof).

All pictured are Rugers with the exception of the Uberti at 9 o'clock which is included to display a fixed firing pin hammer. These are guns used currently for competition in mounted shooting, or for gunbreaking horses for the sport. The revolver at 3 o'clock is a Ruger 'Wrangler' .22 caliber single action revolver. When paired with ramset blanks (used for setting concrete nails and available at any hardware store) these provide a low cost alternative for gunbreaking.

Shotguns

Types of shotguns used in the sport of mounted shooting can be any side by side 'coach style' shotgun of any gauge with a barrel length of no less than 18 inches. An adapter is required on all except the .410 gauge.

Top pictured is a Stoeger 12 gauge, middle is a Yildiz .410 and bottom is a Stoeger .410. These are guns used currently for competition in the shotgun class. This is a separate class offered at some events that is typically two stages. The shotgun hangs in a scabbard on the saddle, the competitor shoots the first five targets with the pistol, then rounds the rundown barrel and shoots the next five balloons in clusters of two and three with the shotgun. The same .45 caliber blanks used for the pistol are also used for the shotgun class.

Rifles

Types of rifles used in the sport of mounted shooting must be manufactured prior to 1900 or a reproduction thereof. Can be a pump action, lever action or revolving rifle. The pump and lever action can be .45 colt, 44-40 or .44 magnum calibers while the revolving rifle needs to be .45 only. The minimum rifle barrel length is set at 16 inches and the overall rifle minimum length is 30 inches.

Top pictured is a .45 caliber Uberti replica of an 1866 Yellowboy, middle is a .44-40 caliber Uberti replica of an 1873 carbine that is branded as the 'Running Comanchero', while the bottom is a .45 caliber Winchester 1894. These are guns used currently for competition in the rifle class. This is a separate class offered at some events that is typically two stages. The rifle is kept in a scabbard on the saddle, the competitor shoots the first five targets with the pistol, then rounds the rundown barrel and shoots the next five balloons with the rifle. The .45 caliber blanks used for the rifle are a 3 in 1 blank cartridge different than other mounted shooting rounds.
